09.09.2020- All children have been re-assessed on their spellings this week. Children will be bringing home a new spelling card either today or tomorrow. Please be aware that all of our spelling cards have been updated to ensure they are streamlined throughout school and meet each year group spelling objectives. Therefore, your child may bring home a card with the same picture/ number on from last year. Please also note that some children may need to recap some spellings they have done previously. Spelling cards are now sent home on small slips of paper and do not need to come back into school. It may be useful if children stick their spellings in their homework book at home so that they don't lose them! Our spelling test will be on a Monday morning (beginning 14th). I will also be adding all spelling cards to the website over the next few days for you to access if their spellings get lost.
09.09.2020- All children have now completed their new Accelerated Reader STAR test which gives them a new ZPD book range. Your child's results will be posted on Tapestry over the next few days. Their MyOn account should automatically update with their new ZPD range. Please see the poster below for information about ZPD ranges. All children have now been given a school book to read in class. Please continue to use your own reading materials or MyOn when reading at home.
09.09.2020- Every Monday, children will take part in some maths challenges; 'Big Maths, Beat That' and 'Times Table Rock Stars Check In'. I have uploaded the sheets below if you would like to practise at home. The aim is to try and beat their previous score each week until they get 100% correct in the time limit (it is expected to take most children the most of the year to achieve this- so don't panic about their scores!).
Frequently Asked Questions- September 2020
Can my child bring a lunch box to school?
Yes, your child is permitted to bring a lunch box to school. This can be fabric or plastic. We ask that you wipe down/disinfect your child's lunch box daily please to limit the spread of any virus. Alternatively, you may wish you send your child's lunch in a disposable bag which can be thrown away at the end of lunch each day.
Does my child need wellies?
As our drop off and pick up point is on the field, it may be a good idea for your child to wear wellies, particularly as we are entering the autumn and winter months. Children will have the opportunity to change to and from their wellies if needed. Alternatively, you may wish to keep their school shoes in class and have them travel to and from school in their wellies.
How will homework work?
Homework will be set on a Monday (beginning 14th Sept) and can be accessed on our class page of the school website. No paper copies will be sent home. Do not feel you need to print the homework. This can either be done electronically in some cases, or by writing answers into their homework book (this book should remain at home). Please photograph completed work and upload to Tapestry or email it directly to me by the following Monday.
Is my child allowed a water bottle?
Yes, children must bring their own water bottles to school. We will be sending these home every day so that they are washed regularly.
Can children leave their PE kits in school?
We are lucky to have a large, spacious cloakroom for our class, therefore it is fine to bring in PE kits and leave them on their pegs, Children will be encouraged to take home their kit after PE each week (currently timetabled for Tuesdays) for washing, particularly as we will be doing PE outside. Please remember to label ALL items, including footwear and send weather appropriate kit for outdoors.
How will we record reading at home?
At the moment, we are not sending home reading diaries to limit the items being sent between school and home each day. (For information regarding reading books see below). As part of their homework submission, I will ask for a very short summary of how they've been getting on with reading the previous week, you may wish your keep your own notes of this as you read each day. Alternatively, you may post updates on Tapestry for me to see.
Welcome to Sherwood class!
We are so very excited to welcome you to Sherwood Class 2020-2021! We have a great year ahead and we are looking forward to seeing you all and getting started.
A few bits for you to note:
Equipment - Your child is not permitted to bring any equipment, such as stationery, to school with them as each child has been provided with their own stationary pack complete with all of the equipment they will need during the school day. These will be sanitised daily.
P.E kits – Our PE session is timetabled for Tuesday afternoons during the Autumn term. PE kits consist of a white t-shirt, black shorts or joggers, trainers or plimsolls and a jumper or hoodie. We strongly recommend PE kits are taken home the same day as all P.E. sessions will be exclusively on our section of the playground, therefore outside in Autumn, so these will probably need washing regularly anyway!
Reading books – Children won’t be allowed to take reading books home initially, so they will be asked to select a book from our brand new range in class to keep in their trays and read at school. I have timetabled in additional reading time during the school day to compensate for this. Children may read free choice at home, or use their MyON login to access electronic books. Details of MyON login refreshers will be sent home the first week back if you are not aware of how to use this.
Reading is extremely important and despite not being able to take books home I hope children will use this as an opportunity to explore books, magazines, newspapers or reference books, anything they enjoy! The more children can read and discuss books, the better their understanding and inference skills will develop.
Break times - Break times will be held on the playground as this is our designated area. A new ‘snack’ system is also in place, please check the 'Lunch Menus' tab on the website for our new snack menu and price list for this year. Please send the correct money with your child as snack will need to be ordered and paid for on entry to class each morning, and no change can be given.
Timetable - Please see a copy of our general timetable below. The topic sessions will vary on a week to week basis to cover the whole curriculum. We are extremely lucky to have the wonderful Mrs Morton working with us in Sherwood class all week and Miss Challands will also be about working 1:1 in the mornings too.
Curriculum - Our class will be maintaining a cross-curricular approach and our main theme of this half term is Street Detectives! - We will be focusing on finding out about our local area.
Homework – Sherwood class homework will consist of a short English and Maths based task as well as times tables and spelling practise. This will be provided electronically via the school website on a Monday, and is due the following Monday. Please upload a photograph of your completed homework onto Tapestry so that we can avoid sending items between school and home. Children will be provided with a homework book to complete their activities in. This does not need to be sent into school. Homework is used in Sherwood class to consolidate learning and provide a different opportunity to explore skills. Homework is not used as an assessment tool, so do not be afraid to help if they are really unsure or stuck.
